Introducing Art Selfie 2: See Yourself in Famous Works of Art Since the rise of generative AI, we've witnessed numerous intriguing transformations of human faces, ranging from Lensa's self-portraits to incredibly realistic digital representations of real individuals. However, I've personally been eagerly awaiting a tool that allows users to envision themselves in iconic pieces of art. Just recently, Google unveiled Art Selfie 2, a new feature within its Arts & Culture app that utilizes generative AI to seamlessly merge your selfies with over 25 artistic styles. Now, you can visualize how you might appear in a Renaissance painting, as a guest at Pierre-Auguste Renoir's "Luncheon of the Boating Party, " or even as the subject of Johannes Vermeer's timeless "Girl With a Pearl Earring. " Art Selfie 2 serves as an enhanced version of a feature initially introduced by Google in 2018, which used computer vision and machine learning to provide users with an estimate of how closely their face matched a particular painting. Business Insider reached out to Google for more details on the specific AI technology employed in their new tool. Art Selfie 2 is among a range of features offered by Google's Arts & Culture app, a platform showcasing art and cultural content from over 2, 000 esteemed cultural institutions. Originally launched in 2016, the app aimed to facilitate users in exploring and learning about specific art pieces.
This revamp, however, resulted from Google's Artists in Residence program, which collaborates with artists to create original artworks in various Google spaces globally. As a fan of Vermeer, the "Vermeer's Pearl Earring" style immediately caught my attention. Surprisingly, Art Selfie 2 flawlessly incorporated my photo into the chosen style. Instead of a typical AI-generated selfie, it appeared as though I had taken a picture donning a vibrant, 17th-century Dutch ensemble. This feature could also prove valuable in inspiring Halloween costume choices. The enigmatic identity of the "girl" in Vermeer's painting has long intrigued art historians, and I find it fascinating to think about the countless individuals who will now insert their own faces into Art Selfie 2's interpretation. The amusing results had me chuckling at my desk, while hoping I didn't disturb my colleagues too much. Google's latest AI art tool serves as an excellent source of entertainment during breaks between meetings or as a lighthearted outlet for laughter. It serves as a reminder to never take oneself too seriously.
