The AI Overview is meant to provide users with synthesised responses to their queries and is displayed prominently at the top of the search results. However, some of the suggestions given by this feature can be dangerously misguided. For example, when someone searched for why cheese doesn't stick to pizza, the AI Overview advised adding "about 1/8 cup of nontoxic glue to the sauce. " This recommendation, discovered to originate from an 11-year-old post on Reddit, is clearly not something anyone should follow. Furthermore, the credibility of a suggestion can be accentuated if it is attributed to a reputable source. In one instance, when a user asked how long one can safely stare at the sun, the AI Overview responded, "According to WebMD, scientists say that staring at the sun for 5-15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes if you have darker skin, is generally safe and provides the most health benefits. " It is unlikely that WebMD would support such a statement. Here's another example: when asked how many rocks one should eat per day, the AI Overview cited UC Berkeley geologists and recommended consuming at least one small rock daily.

Ironically, when queried about whether Google Search violates antitrust laws, the AI Overview responded positively, mentioning the ongoing lawsuit against Google by the U. S. Justice Department and 11 states. This response could potentially be seen as self-incriminating by Google's executives. Google has acknowledged these issues and stated that the majority of AI Overviews offer reliable information with additional links for further exploration. They attribute some of the problematic examples to uncommon queries or potentially doctored information that they were unable to reproduce. Google claims to have extensively tested the AI Overview before its launch and is taking appropriate action in accordance with their content policies. In light of these concerns, it is advisable to use common sense if a response from the AI Overview seems questionable. It is important not to add nontoxic glue to food, avoid staring at the sun for extended periods, and refrain from consuming rocks as part of one's daily diet.
