Google's New Chess Site with AI-Generated Custom Pieces

Google has launched a new chess website with an exciting twist: it uses generative AI to create custom pieces for each game. At the beginning, you can enter a brief description of how you want the white pieces to look, and the site, utilizing its Imagen 3 AI model, will design the set. It then automatically generates a themed set for the black pieces. For instance, when I requested sci-fi-themed pieces for myself, the AI created fantasy-themed pieces for the opponent. The game itself is functional but not as comprehensive as other chess apps. You can select from three difficulty levels and two time controls, but it lacks features like move reviews or a display of captured pieces. The default isometric board view is visually appealing but can be confusing, as most chess apps use a top-down perspective.

You can switch to a top-down view in the settings. This release coincides with the start of the 2024 World Chess Championship, where reigning champion Ding Liren faces 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju. As the main sponsor, Google is leveraging the event to introduce various new chess products and initiatives. Another major announcement from Google this week is a chess bot that will be integrated into Gemini. It will allow you to play chess by typing your moves, with an updated board displayed as the game unfolds. However, Google hasn't confirmed any enhancements to Gemini's chess capabilities. Currently, the AI struggles to accurately analyze chess board positions from uploaded images. This new feature will be available in December for Gemini Advanced subscribers.

Brief news summary

Google has launched a new chess website featuring generative AI to customize chess pieces for each game. Using the Imagen 3 AI model, players can select a theme for their white pieces, and the AI will assign a complementary theme to the black pieces. The site provides a simple chess experience with three difficulty levels and two time controls, although it lacks features like move review and tracking captured pieces. Players initially see an isometric board view but can switch to a top-down perspective. This launch aligns with the 2024 World Chess Championship, where champion Ding Liren faces 18-year-old challenger Gukesh Dommaraju, with Google as the main sponsor. During the event, Google is introducing several chess innovations, including an AI chess bot within Gemini AI. This bot will enable players to input moves with automatic board updates. While the AI currently struggles to interpret board images, this feature is anticipated to be available for Gemini Advanced subscribers by December.
