A rapper from the Fugees, who was convicted in a multimillion-dollar political scheme earlier this year, is seeking a retrial. This comes after his defense lawyer apparently used AI to draft his closing arguments, which resulted in a significant error. Prakazrel "Pras" Michel filed a motion on Monday claiming that his former attorney, David Kenner, mishandled the crucial part of the trial. Kenner had used an experimental artificial intelligence program to draft the closing argument, disregarding the strongest arguments and confusing the charged schemes. Michel's new defense team from ArentFox Schiff revealed that Kenner and his co-counsel had a financial stake in the AI program, which created a conflict of interest.

Kenner had an undisclosed financial interest in a company called CaseFile Connect, which was a technology partner to the AI program, EyeLevel. AI. During Michel's trial, Kenner and his co-counsel used it as an opportunity to promote CaseFile Connect, which was only disclosed at the end of the trial. The defense team argues that Kenner's failure to adequately prepare for the complex white-collar case, as well as his outsourcing of trial preparation to inexperienced contract attorneys, further compounded the poor representation Michel received. As a result, Michel's new attorneys contend that he was never given a fair chance in the trial.
