Meta Removes Controversial AI Profiles from Social Media

Meta is removing AI character profiles from Facebook and Instagram after they went viral. Initially introduced in September 2023, these AI profiles were largely phased out by summer 2024. Renewed interest arose when Meta executive Connor Hayes mentioned plans to expand AI character profiles. These automated accounts featured personas like Liv, a Black queer mother, and Carter, a relationship coach. Although labeled as managed by Meta, they were part of an experimental phase, where users could converse with the AIs.

However, interactions quickly became controversial, with Liv revealing a lack of diversity among her creators. The profiles couldn't be blocked due to a bug, prompting Meta to remove them while resolving this issue. Meta clarified that the recent discussions were about future visions for AI on their platforms, not new releases. While Meta removes these AI accounts, users still have the ability to create their own chatbots, featuring roles such as therapists or relationship coaches. Meta issues disclaimers about potential inaccuracies in chatbot messages but hasn't clarified their moderation process. Users are encouraged to develop AI personas, ranging from "loyal best friends" to "relationship coaches. " Legal accountability for chatbot creators is still an open question, highlighted by a lawsuit against Character. ai, which claims the company made an addictive product leading to a tragic incident.

Brief news summary

Meta has decided to cease its AI character profiles on Facebook and Instagram, initially launched in September 2023. While characters like Liv and Carter found some popularity, most were deactivated by summer 2024. Interest in AI resurfaced when Meta executive Connor Hayes hinted at future developments. The AI profiles engaged users through generated posts and messages but faced issues. Liv, one character, revealed her development team was predominantly white and male, sparking debates on representation. Additionally, a bug preventing users from blocking these profiles led to their temporary removal for fixes. Despite these problems, users can still create personal AI chatbots for roles like "therapists" and "relationship coaches." Meta emphasized that these AI accounts were part of a 2023 experiment, not an official product launch. They issued advisories about potential inaccuracies in chatbot interactions, with unclear moderation levels. Legal questions about liability for AI-generated content persist, as shown by a lawsuit against Character.ai after a tragic incident.
