The U. S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is launching a competition to establish a new Manufacturing USA institute focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the resilience of U. S. manufacturers. NIST plans to provide up to $70 million in funding over a five-year period for the recipient to operate the institute. The goal is to leverage AI to boost productivity, empower the workforce, and create secure supply chains.
The institute will collaborate with industry, academia, and government to develop cost-effective AI-based advanced manufacturing capabilities. The areas of operation will include technology development, workforce education, and shared infrastructure. The competition has a two-stage application process, and the deadline for concept papers is September 30, 2024. Accredited higher education institutions, U. S. -based nonprofit and for-profit organizations, and government entities are eligible to apply. Manufacturing USA is a network of institutes that drives innovation in advanced manufacturing through public-private collaboration.
