Introducing Reddit Answers: A New AI-Powered Search Tool for Reddit

Reddit is introducing a new AI-powered search tool called Reddit Answers to facilitate easier information discovery on its platform. Like other AI search products, it generates well-organized responses to queries and provides links to its sources. What sets Reddit Answers apart is that it exclusively sources information from Reddit, potentially allowing users to bypass Google and access information directly from the platform. Recently, Reddit has limited how external sites can search its content, with Google being the only major search engine that includes current Reddit results. However, Reddit likely prefers users to conduct searches directly on its site, and Reddit Answers might be an effective tool for this. Initially, Reddit Answers will be available to “a limited number of users” in the US, in English, accessible via the web (but not on Old Reddit) and iOS. (“We’re working on Android as we speak, ” mentioned Serkan Piantino, Reddit’s VP of product, in an interview. ) Reddit aims to expand the tool to support more languages and locations “in the future, ” according to a blog post. I had access to a test version of Reddit Answers and, though I haven’t explored it extensively, I found it impressive. It features a large query box and suggests various searches like “favorite Nintendo character of all time, ” “best mystery novels of 2025, ” and “tips for flying with a baby for the first time. ” I selected the last query, and the tool swiftly compiled a list with bulleted suggestions, hyperlinks, and a clickable arrow leading to the source information.

Clicking either opens a sidebar showing the original post. Conversely, conducting the same search through Google yields a typical list of links to browse. Unlike Google’s plain text results, which lack summaries or bullet points, Reddit Answers provides more immediate information. However, I'm wary of AI summaries, considering they sometimes make significant errors, so I still find Google results useful for exploring potential Reddit posts. According to spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt, Reddit Answers can rapidly incorporate recent events on Reddit. Nevertheless, I didn’t see this in practice; when I asked, “who won yesterday’s NFL game, ” it inaccurately referenced a December 1st Eagles-Ravens game rather than Thursday’s Packers-Lions game. This could be due to the product still being refined. From my testing, Reddit Answers serves better as a starting point for exploring general topics on Reddit rather than as an up-to-the-minute search tool. Although helpful, I’m uncertain if it’s enough to alter my habit of using Google for searching Reddit content.

Brief news summary

Reddit has launched Reddit Answers, an AI-powered search tool aimed at improving how users find information by leveraging Reddit's vast content. This move is part of Reddit's strategy to compete with Google Search and encourage users to rely on the platform for inquiries, thereby gaining more control over information retrieval. Reddit Answers is currently in a testing phase, accessible to a limited number of users in the U.S. on web and iOS, with future plans to expand to Android and introduce more regional and language options. The tool features a query box with suggested searches and delivers structured responses linked to sources. It efficiently tackles queries like "favorite Nintendo character" or "tips for flying with a baby" by offering concise lists and recommendations. In beta testing, Reddit Answers provided useful lists with direct links, presenting a more streamlined alternative to Google’s extensive lists. However, it faces challenges such as AI inaccuracies and difficulties in supplying up-to-date information, like recent sports scores. While Reddit Answers is effective for exploring general topics, its current limitations hinder its ability to provide timely information, preventing it from fully replacing Google. Nonetheless, it remains a promising and evolving tool for content discovery.
