Solana Co-Founder Proposes Meta Blockchain to Reduce Data Availability Costs and Enhance Interoperability

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has proposed the creation of a “meta blockchain” aimed at reducing data availability (DA) costs while enhancing interoperability among multiple blockchain networks. In a post on X dated May 12, Yakovenko explained that the meta blockchain would not function as an independent layer but rather as an aggregator, collecting and organizing data from various chains within a single, unified transaction ordering system. The central concept involves referencing the latest block headers from each participating chain, providing a shared and deterministic way to align transactions. He stated: “There should be a meta blockchain. Post data anywhere—Ethereum, Celestia, Solana—and use a specific rule to merge data from all the chains into a single ordering. This would actually allow the meta chain to use the cheapest currently available DA offer. ” Regarding the Meta Blockchain, Yakovenko proposed that a Meta transaction on Solana could incorporate recent blocks from Ethereum and Celestia. This method would reduce uncertainty in transaction ordering and enable users to leverage the most affordable data availability solutions. Yakovenko further highlighted that enforcing a fixed rule for merging transactions would guarantee consistency system-wide. This approach could diminish dependence on centralized sequencers, often criticized as single points of failure in many rollup ecosystems. He envisions an ideal system employing a protocol that autonomously merges data from all connected chains without needing an external coordinator. He added: “A lame version of this relies on an external sequencer.

I think the cooler version is just a merge rule that reads all the chains. So users can send txs anywhere. ” Feasibility challenges Although the idea has drawn interest, some remain skeptical about its practicality. Celestia COO Nick White expressed reservations, pointing out that similar concepts, called DA multiplexers, have long been proposed theoretically but rarely implemented. White argued such models increase operational complexity since rollups must run nodes for each DA layer. Moreover, managing fork-choice rules across several chains would significantly raise overhead while yielding limited benefits. Nonetheless, Yakovenko remains optimistic that affordable and accessible data availability will reduce the expense of other on-chain operations. He stated: “Making data availability cheap allows for making everything else cheap. Bandwidth is the irreducible bottleneck. ”

Brief news summary

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko introduced a “meta blockchain” concept aimed at lowering data availability (DA) costs and enhancing interoperability across blockchains like Ethereum, Celestia, and Solana. This innovative model replaces traditional layered blockchains with a unified transaction ordering system that references recent block headers to maintain deterministic alignment. It allows users to select cost-efficient DA solutions while enforcing fixed merging rules, reducing reliance on centralized sequencers—a common weakness in rollup architectures. The design promotes seamless cross-chain transaction processing without the need for external coordinators, improving scalability. However, Celestia COO Nick White cautions that handling multiple DA layers and fork-choice rules could add complexity and overhead due to DA multiplexers. Despite these concerns, Yakovenko emphasizes that lowering DA costs will tackle bandwidth constraints, the main scalability bottleneck, ultimately making on-chain operations more scalable and cost-effective.
