Other states are also enacting laws targeting specific areas, such as regulating computer-generated images in media and political campaigns, or criminalizing sexually explicit computer-generated images. These state-level actions are driven by the demands of constituents for protection against potential harms. Despite numerous tech regulation bills in Congress, none have been passed. However, discussions and drafts of AI-related bills are ongoing, signaling the growing awareness of the need for regulation. The rapid evolution of AI technologies has prompted state legislators to take action to keep pace with understanding their utilization, preventing potential damage, and harnessing the benefits they offer.

To date, 28 states have enacted laws addressing the use, regulation, or control of AI. Various approaches have been taken by states, including interdisciplinary collaboration, protecting data privacy, transparency, combating discrimination, regulating AI in elections and schools, and criminalizing computer-generated explicit images. The regulation of AI poses a challenge of balancing innovation with privacy concerns and mitigating potential harms. The legislations at the state level could potentially drive federal action due to the competitive nature of AI development and its significance to national security and economic growth. The potential job creation opportunities resulting from AI technologies have also contributed to lawmakers' enthusiasm about its potential. Looking ahead, legislators aim to keep up with the rapidly evolving AI landscape through continued discussions and understanding of its application and impact.
