TCL Unveils New AI-Generated Short Films: A Review

Brief news summary

Earlier this year, TCL received criticism for its AI-animated short film "Next Stop Paris," which was marred by awkward animations and stiff characters. Despite the feedback, TCL proceeded to release five more AI-generated short films on its TCLtv Plus platform. While there were some improvements, the films continued to showcase the limitations of AI in video production, echoing issues faced by tools like OpenAI's Sora. The films are ranked below from most to least bearable: 5. **Sun Day**: Inspired by Ray Bradbury's "All Summer in a Day," this film tells the story of a girl on a planet where the sun emerges only every seven years. Although the plot revolves around bullying that prevents her from witnessing it, the AI animations fail to effectively convey the story, and the voice acting lacks authenticity. 4. **Project Nexus**: This short is akin to a five-minute trailer, featuring teenagers who gain powers from a rock explosion. Despite its creativity, the animation remains clumsy, and the voice acting is uninspiring. 3. **The Best Day of My Life**: A docufiction piece following Dr. Warren Brown's survival of an avalanche. The blend of live-action and AI-generated scenes feels disjointed, with bizarre elements like a morphing zebra disrupting the narrative. 2. **The Audition**: This film starts off strong but loses steam as an actor undergoes bizarre transformations for a role. The humor falls flat, and the ending diminishes its initial potential. 1. **The Slug**: The most unsettling short depicts a woman with arthritis turning into a slug, ignored by her family, creating a Kafkaesque atmosphere. Overall, these films highlight the significant challenges AI must overcome in filmmaking before achieving mainstream success.

Earlier this year, TCL released a trailer for "Next Stop Paris, " an AI-animated short film resembling an exaggerated Lifetime movie. The AI characteristics were evident, with static mouths, lifeless expressions, and odd, jittery animation. Despite online criticism, TCL has now introduced five more AI-generated short films on its TCLtv Plus platform, all of which still highlight the limitations of AI video technology. Here’s a ranking of these films: 5. **Sun Day**: This futuristic story echoes Ray Bradbury’s "All Summer in a Day. " A girl on a planet with sunlight every seven years wins a lottery to see the sun but is thwarted by bullies. Her journey, helped by her telepathic(?) connection with her father, is hard to follow due to poor AI animation, despite decent voice acting. 4. **Project Nexus**: More like a trailer, it features teens gaining supernatural powers from a radioactive rock explosion under a prison. Though its plot is intriguing, the animation and voice acting detract from the experience. 3.

**The Best Day of My Life**: A docufiction style short, it follows Dr. Warren Brown's recount of his leg loss in an avalanche. The AI-generated flashbacks and strange sequences, like a zebra turning into a lion, mix with real actor narration, resulting in a bizarre end where Brown calls it the "best day" of his life. 2. **The Audition**: Starting as a simple skit, it quickly becomes odd as an actor transforms into different personas to please a picky casting director, only to be rejected. AI transformations, including deepfakes into famous movie scenes, add to its peculiarity. 1. **The Slug**: Inspired by Kafka's "The Metamorphosis, " it portrays a woman with arthritis who transforms into a slug. Her attempt to connect with others is futile until she morphs entirely, at which point someone finally returns her call, adding to its disturbing nature. These films demonstrate the current shortcomings of AI-generated content and TCL's persistent, yet flawed, exploration of the medium.
