The Brutalist: Adrien Brody's Film Uses AI to Overcome Language Barriers

The Adrien Brody drama "The Brutalist" has garnered widespread acclaim and received nominations at various award shows, yet the film is facing criticism for employing artificial intelligence to address minor language gaps left by Brody and co-star Felicity Jones in a significant segment. In a recent interview with Red Shark News, editor Dávid Jancsó shed light on the film’s production team’s use of A. I. and the reasons behind this decision. The choice to incorporate A. I. arose from the necessity of enhancing a small portion of Brody and Jones’ proficiency in Hungarian. “As a native Hungarian speaker, I can attest that it’s one of the most challenging languages to pronounce, ” he remarked. Jancsó elaborated, stating, “It’s a highly unique language. ” The notable instance is a two-minute scene where Brody’s character reads a letter to his wife, which is delivered entirely in Hungarian. TheWrap understands that no other aspect of the actors’ performances was digitally altered with Respeecher. “For those coming from the Anglo-Saxon world, certain sounds can be particularly difficult to master, ” he noted. “Initially, we attempted to ADR these challenging elements with the actors. Then, we tried replacing them with other actors, but that approach failed. Consequently, we explored alternative methods to enhance the performance. ” The team recorded the actors' voices using Respeecher, then introduced A. I. words in Hungarian. Jancsó also contributed his voice to the film. “Much of their Hungarian dialogue includes parts of my speech.
We took great care to preserve their performances, ” he explained. “It primarily involves substituting a few letters here and there. You could accomplish this yourself in ProTools, but given the extensive Hungarian dialogue, we needed to expedite the process, or we’d still be in post-production. ” Jancsó also defended the discussion surrounding A. I. in the film industry. “Talking about A. I. tends to be controversial, but it shouldn’t be, ” he remarked. “We ought to engage in open conversations about the tools that A. I. offers. Everything in the film that utilizes A. I. has been done previously; it simply accelerates the process. We leverage A. I. to create the small details that we lacked the budget or time to film. ”
Brief news summary
"The Brutalist," featuring Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, has received acclaim and several award nominations, sparking discussions around its use of artificial intelligence (A.I.) to refine Hungarian dialogue. Editor Dávid Jancsó explained that A.I. was introduced to assist actors who were not familiar with Hungarian, a particularly intricate language. One standout moment includes Brody performing a two-minute letter in Hungarian. While the core performances remained intact, A.I. was employed for minor edits to enhance linguistic accuracy. The decision against re-recording lines was influenced by practical factors, opting instead for technologies like Respeecher, which align voice recordings with the actors' original speech patterns. Jancsó advocated for the integration of A.I., highlighting its growing role in the film industry. He noted that technological advancements have been integral to filmmaking for years, potentially offering significant benefits in dialogue refinement while addressing common time and budgetary constraints faced by filmmakers.
