O2 Launches AI Granny 'Daisy' to Combat Telephone Scams

Telephone scams have been around for a while, but with artificial intelligence (AI) making it harder to identify if the caller is genuine, U. K. mobile network O2 has devised a solution. They've developed an "AI granny" named Daisy to keep scammers on the phone without achieving anything. Daisy uses "human-like rambling chat" to engage scammers, deliberately wasting their time with fictional tales involving family, knitting, and fake personal details like bank information. This project was developed with the help of YouTuber, software engineer, and famous "scambaiter" Jim Browning.

Daisy utilizes various AI models to listen and respond to calls. However, you won't be able to use Daisy yourself, as O2 has arranged for some of its numbers to be added to lists frequently targeted by scammers for this purpose.

Brief news summary

Telephone scams are increasingly sophisticated, often utilizing AI, making it challenging to discern genuine interactions. To counter this, the U.K.'s mobile network O2 has created "AI granny" Daisy, an AI that engages scammers in long, irrelevant conversations to waste their time. Daisy impersonates a real person, discussing topics like family or knitting, and provides entirely fictitious personal details, including fake bank information. Developed with YouTuber and software engineer Jim Browning, known for "scambaiting," Daisy operates using various AI models to interact seamlessly with callers. While not available for public use, O2 has registered specific phone numbers on scam lists, allowing Daisy to engage known scammers directly. This inventive strategy aims to hinder scam operations by consuming their time and redirecting resources away from deceitful activities.
