During POLITICO's AI & Tech Summit, Senator Todd Young (R-Ind. ) expressed that the regulation of artificial intelligence will likely depend on its deployment. He remains optimistic that the current Congress has a chance to pass legislation governing AI, while simultaneously working to ensure that lawmakers have a comprehensive understanding of the technology. Young stated, "I believe we have a fighting chance to accomplish this. It is quite possible that we will pass some specific components of an AI regulatory framework. " He emphasized that concerns regarding the use of AI for entertainment purposes should not be a top priority, but rather the autonomous use of AI in military weaponry should be the focus. Young is actively leading the effort to drive AI regulation in the Senate.
He highlighted that the Senate is currently in an "education stage, " where he is working to educate his colleagues on the workings of AI and other emerging technologies before drafting any concrete legislation. The senator commended Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for collaborating with him in this endeavor. "One of the things I appreciate about Chuck is his astuteness and straightforwardness, " Young said. "If we establish clear expectations and find common ground, we can avoid any issues. "
