I rely on Google and Tom's Guide for all my online searches and deals for electronics. With the advancement of AI chatbots, people are questioning the future of search and how it will evolve. To test the capabilities of AI chatbots, I tried ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity, which offer live web access. For the first prompt on what to do this weekend, ChatGPT provided a packed agenda with links to more information, although the links could have been more diverse. Google Gemini suggested Miami Fashion Week, but the next edition was in November, not when I wanted to visit.
Perplexity gave mixed results, with an itinerary based on events in June 2024. For the second prompt on buying a laptop, ChatGPT recommended the Acer Aspire 5 Slim, followed by Lenovo IdeaPad 1 and an HP Chromebook. Gemini and Perplexity also suggested Acer and Lenovo laptops, but Perplexity relied too much on Reddit threads. For the third prompt on science news, ChatGPT was unaware of a recent kidney transplant procedure, while Gemini acknowledged the advancement. Perplexity referred to the Northwestern case, providing a link to the original press release and reputable news sources. In conclusion, I was pleasantly surprised by the AI chatbots' capabilities, but I am not yet convinced to switch from search engines to chatbots. Having links to the sources referred to by the chatbots was helpful and reassuring.
Brief news summary
AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity have made impressive advancements despite their reliance on search engines. However, when tested in providing a Miami weekend itinerary and laptop recommendations within a $400 budget, ChatGPT offered a detailed schedule but with limited sources. Gemini suggested Miami Fashion Week in November instead of June, while Perplexity yielded mixed results, including events in June 2024 and unrelated concert links. For laptop recommendations, ChatGPT suggested the Acer Aspire 5 Slim, Lenovo IdeaPad 1, and HP Chromebook. Gemini and Perplexity also recommended Acer and Lenovo laptops, with Gemini providing more specific specifications and Perplexity relying on less reliable sources. Regarding an awake kidney transplant, ChatGPT did not acknowledge advancements, but Gemini recognized it as a novel procedure. Perplexity mentioned the Northwestern case and provided reputable news articles as sources. In conclusion, while these chatbots have displayed surprising capabilities, it is still advisable to utilize search engines alongside them. Incorporating source links for verification and task completion proved to be helpful.
