The White House responded on Friday to the explicit AI-generated images of Taylor Swift that went viral this week, expressing concern and urging Congress to take action. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, speaking at a press briefing, stated, "We are deeply concerned about the reports of circulating false images, specifically non-consensual and intimate images. This is alarming. " Jean-Pierre further emphasized the role of social media companies in enforcing their own rules to prevent the dissemination of misinformation and non-consensual imagery, stating that the lax enforcement disproportionately affects women and girls who are often the targets of online harassment and abuse.
She highlighted President Biden's commitment to addressing this issue through executive orders and the launch of task forces and helplines by the Department of Justice. When asked if legislation should be enacted to combat this AI-generated imagery, Jean-Pierre responded affirmatively, stating that Congress should take legislative action, while also acknowledging the federal government's ongoing efforts to address the problem. SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, also condemned the false images of Taylor Swift, calling for legislation to make the creation and distribution of such fake and explicit images illegal to protect individuals' privacy and autonomy.
