In the past five years, Google. org has invested over $200 million in AI for social good initiatives, targeting significant global issues such as hunger and public health. Building on this foundation, we launched AI Collaboratives in September, a new funding model aimed at connecting public, private, nonprofit organizations, and researchers to devise AI-driven solutions beneficial to communities worldwide. Today, we’re excited to provide insights into our initial two focus areas for AI Collaboratives: Wildfires and Food Security. Our funding experience, comprehensive AI research addressing major global challenges, and collaboration with Google Research indicate that both of these areas could significantly benefit from AI innovations. Here’s an update on our progress in these initiatives. **AI Collaborative: Wildfires** Wildfires pose a worldwide crisis, responsible for over 300, 000 deaths annually from smoke exposure and causing billions in economic losses. The AI Collaborative: Wildfires is a strategic initiative by Google. org aimed at uniting leading nonprofits, academic institutions, government entities, and private companies to enhance fire management through AI.

So far, Google. org has allocated over $27 million to support this initiative. We have brought together more than 15 partner organizations, including Earth Fire Alliance and Moore Foundation, to advance this crucial work. By streamlining funding and merging advanced science with innovative technology and real-world applications, we empower collaborators with essential tools to identify and monitor wildfires in near real-time, assess wildfire risks, promote beneficial fires, and ultimately mitigate the devastating impacts of major wildfires. **AI Collaborative: Food Security** Almost one-third of the global population experiences moderate to severe food insecurity, driven by factors like extreme weather, conflict, and economic upheaval. The AI Collaborative: Food Security aims to bolster the resilience of food systems worldwide and enhance food security for the most at-risk populations through AI technology, collaborative research, data sharing, and coordinated efforts. To date, we have enlisted 10 organizations in this initiative, and we look forward to providing more updates soon. **The Power of Collaboration** AI Collaboratives are based on the belief that AI's true potential is realized not only through the technology but also through the partnerships that enable its ethical application. By tackling urgent challenges such as wildfires and food insecurity, we aspire for these Collaboratives to lay the groundwork for AI to contribute significantly to society for years ahead.
