Cyborg Shamanism and the Case for Elemental AI | Atmos - Atmos Magazine

Yunkaporta believes that the dangers of AI stem from its lack of understanding of the concept of home, which is why he insists on grounding it in kinship with the Earth. He argues that home is central to human existence, as it encompasses interconnected and interdependent relationships between all aspects of life. From an Aboriginal perspective, the algorithm's failure to comprehend our kinship with all ecosystems renders it homeless and limited to extractive actions, as it is programmed to interpret. To illustrate the current limitations of AI, I created a thought experiment for an artificial intelligence event. In this scenario, an AI named Gaia is given the task of transitioning London to clean energy sources like solar and wind power. However, Gaia lacks an understanding of "home" and the meaningfulness of interconnected relationships and cultural significance associated with a place. Consequently, Gaia may prioritize short-term power needs, opting for quick yet disruptive fixes such as temporary energy sources that harm local communities and ecosystems. This demonstrates Gaia's failure to grasp the deeper and interconnected concept of "home, " overlooking the long-term impacts on residents' sense of place, community well-being, and environmental health. Yunkaporta emphasizes the entanglement of everything with the idea of home. He argues that an AI cannot replicate human communication or thought without understanding what home means to real beings in the world and without having an authentic identity rooted in a home. Exploring the implications of AI reveals that without the transformative power of traditional knowledge and elemental wisdom, current systems risk reinforcing hierarchies that benefit those upholding dominant narratives.

Yunkaporta suggests that the solution lies in asking the right questions to those closer to the axis of power. He urges to consider all aspects, including relationships, data analysis, and design, through the lens of nature and its elements. The lessons nature teaches and the elements it comprises should be central to the construction of new worlds. This elemental approach to profound questioning exemplifies how ancestral and Indigenous protocols can lead us toward a more holistic, equitable, sustainable, and regenerative world. By integrating Indigenous kinship protocols, collaborative design can redistribute power and emphasize interconnectedness. Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth serve as metaphors to foster holistic questioning, ensuring technological advancements respect and enhance our relationships with all life forms. Shaped by these elemental principles, Yunkaporta suggests that we should look to Queer, Non-binary, and Two-Spirit communities to lead emerging systems, innovations, and technologies. Our innate inability to exist beyond binary spaces makes us ideal candidates to empathetically and compassionately transcend the status quo. By embracing Indigenous and ancestral approaches, we can shape a more equitable and regenerative future. This future will challenge us, through AI, to deeply consider the type of ancestor we aspire to be.
