The R-410A Deadline Is Now a Hard Stop for New Installations

If you install HVAC systems, you are operating in a rapidly narrowing window. The EPA has confirmed that all pre-2025 R-410A inventory must be installed in new residential air conditioners and heat pumps before January 1, 2026. After that date, installing a system with R-410A—even if you have stock on hand—violates federal guidelines and exposes your business to substantial fines and civil penalties.

This is not a soft transition or a delayed enforcement period. Distributors and contractors who facilitate illegal R-410A installations after the cutoff face federal enforcement action. The stakes are real.

Why the EPA Is Phasing Out R-410A

R-410A has a Global Warming Potential of 2,088, meaning it traps roughly 2,000 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. The EPA is executing a phased reduction of hydrofluorocarbons under the AIM Act to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2036. R-410A phase-out is a centerpiece of that strategy.

Manufacturers stopped producing new R-410A equipment on January 1, 2025. Existing stock of new systems can still be installed through the end of 2025, but no new units can be manufactured or imported.

The Transition to A2L Refrigerants

The approved replacements are A2L refrigerants, primarily R-454B and R-32. These are mildly flammable, but the regulatory verdict is clear: they are exceptionally difficult to ignite and have very slow flame propagation speed, making them safe for residential use when installed in properly designed equipment.

However, A2L refrigerants cannot simply be dropped into older R-410A systems as a retrofit. They require new compressors, redesigned electrical components, and integrated safety features. Mixing R-32 or R-454B into an R-410A unit will destroy the compressor and is illegal under EPA Section 608.

Cost and Inventory Planning

A2L systems typically cost 5–10% more than legacy R-410A models due to these advanced safety features. If you have not yet adjusted your pricing or customer communication, now is the time to do so. Homeowners will see the price increase, and transparency about why—federal phase-out, not manufacturer markup—helps manage objections.

Check your current R-410A inventory. If you have pre-2025 units in stock, you have until December 31, 2025 to install them. After that, you will need A2L-compatible systems for all new installations. Plan your supply chain accordingly and confirm your distributor relationships are aligned with this timeline.

Servicing Old Systems Remains Unchanged

This deadline applies only to new installations. R-410A refrigerant remains available for servicing and maintaining existing systems indefinitely. If a customer's R-410A air conditioner or heat pump needs a refrigerant charge, you can legally provide it. The ban does not affect the service market for legacy equipment.

However, do not attempt to bridge the gap by selling an old-stock R-410A system to an undisclosed customer after the deadline, or by reselling refurbished R-410A equipment. Enforcement is focused on new installations, but the legal risk is real.

What This Means for Your Business

Treat January 1, 2026 as a hard compliance checkpoint, not a guideline. Update your sales systems, training, and customer agreements to reflect the A2L transition. Confirm that your technicians understand the incompatibility and danger of mixing refrigerants, and that your compliance culture treats the deadline seriously.

The 5–10% cost increase for A2L systems is a legitimate market factor. Communicate it clearly to customers and position it as meeting federal requirements, not as a hidden surcharge. And if you have not already reviewed your EPA Section 608 certification and your company's documentation practices, now is the moment to do so.
